Catol Teixeira

ODE

Binta Kopp | ZaBenzi

Choreographic practice on the unfinished
Homage to transience
Gaps & lacunae

Synonymous with homage, an ode is a poem traditionally accompanied by music, dedicated to a person or event. The solo «ODE» by Catol Teixeira unfolds as a dance dedicated to gaps, to ruptures and to transformations - a lament for what slips through the fingers, for what never arrives, for what once was almost here. Teixeira embodies this state of departure: the body as a map of previous movements, an archive of steps taken, resisted, forgotten or surfaced. In repetitive yet continuously changing movements interrupted by unexpected, disruptive moments, Teixeira’s body materializes while also seeming to evaporate at the same time. «ODE» seeks to inhabit the raw space where traces linger, where steps are haunted by what came before. The residue of a movement, the echo of a choice, the afterimage of contact—all remain. In the tension between loss and grace, the dance unfolds—not to resolve, but to stay, for a moment longer, with what has already changed.

Biography

Catol Teixeira is a performer and choreographer born in Porto Alegre (Brazil) and living in Geneva and Rio de Janeiro. After training in classical dance, circus, air acrobatics and contemporary dance, Teixeira studied at BODHI/SEAD in Salzburg and ROAR in Berlin and obtained a bachelor’s degree in contemporary dance at La Manufacture in Lausanne as well as a master’s degree from HEAD in Geneva. Teixeira approaches performance as invocation — an ongoing study and experimentation for transformation, presence, and embodiment. They craft compositional works that are grounded on queer affection and ways of living and challenge notions of capture. Teixeira’s choreographic works have been presented at festivals and venues such as the Pavillon ADC (Geneva), the Théâtre Vidy (Lausanne), La Ménagerie de Verre (Paris), ImPulsTanz (Vienna) and the Dance Biennial SESC (São Paulo), among others.
