Dancehall on stage
Black dance culture
Energetic performance
A feast

«1GUH WATCH» celebrates Dancehall on contemporary dance stages. How can this dance style, which originated in Jamaica, be transposed to European stages — and most importantly, by whom? «1GUH WATCH» is a collective creation by the Jamaican dance artists Dynamic Legends, Miss Rose, Shanky Equanoxx and DJ Pappi, together with the Finnish photographer eye juice and the Lausanne-based Spanish choreographer Tamara Alegre. Rooted in the raw essence of Dancehall — through its creators — the work playfully explores its rich, detailed and communal choreographic language, celebrating the emotions, struggles and triumphs that define the genre. «1GUH WATCH» seeks to bridge Dancehall and contemporary dance, placing Black artists and their culture at the centre, acknowledged and celebrated in their full creative force.

Biographies

The association FUEGO CONTIGO includes Tamara Alegre, Dynamic Legends, Miss Rose, Dj Pappi, eye juice and guests.

Tamara Alegre works in dance and choreography, and previously as a curator for underground music, as a tour manager and DJ. After studying business and psychology, Alegre acquired a master’s degree in choreography at DOCH Stockholm in 2018, and was appointed Artist in Residence at the Arsenic in Lausanne from 2019 to 2021. Alegre’s artistic works embody resistance, intensity, self-pleasure and the power of dancing together. Her dance practice is characterized by a growing passion for Dancehall and includes her aspiration of understanding how she as a white person can artistically engage with Black culture.

Dynamic Legends is a dance crew founded in 2019 consisting of the members Fancy, Devy and Blazer. Its main dance style, Dancehall, is part of their culture. Now looking back on more than 17 years in the business, they have taught Dancehall workshops in North America, Asia and Europe, danced in music videos and toured extensively.

Miss Rose is a dancer from London. Born with a Caribbean background, she has been dancing to Dancehall rhythms since she was five. She has performed at various festivals and has worked with artists such as Skillibeng, Stormzy, Chi Ching Ching, La Lee, Popcaan, Shenseea and Spice. Her goal is bringing together the community, creating a better understanding of Dancehall, and preserving this culture.

Lumi Pulkkinen, known as eye juice, is a Finnish photographer and Dancehall dancer with a background in cultural studies and visual communication. In their practice, eye juice explores dance and Dancehall through creative and conceptual projects, often working with different media such as photography, videography and graphic design.

Dj Pappi is a selecta (DJ) from Kingston, Jamaica, currently living in Paris. He is the CEO and founder of Young Vybz Sound, headquartered in Jamaica, France and America, and has spent a decade working in the entertainment industry. Before his DJ career, he was a dancer.
