Geneva
Edition 2017
Edition 2017
In the run-up to this celebration of contemporary dance, which is held every two years in a different Swiss city, a jury comprising five leading figures from the world of dance has watched more than 140 productions over the last 12 months. The winning entries will be presented at 12 venues across Geneva, which have joined forces especially for the occasion through the creation of an association and a small team.
In doing so, they, alongside Reso – Dance Network Switzerland, provide a tangible demonstration of their commitment to the art of choreography and dance in Switzerland. The Swiss Dance Days, which are also open to the public, are aimed at professionals – journalists, festival directors, programmers – from both Switzerland and abroad.

Kaori Ito / Himé
They had not spoken for more than 10 years when, in 2012, Kaori Ito decided to contact her father, the sculptor Hiroshi Ito. Having roamed the world with her work, the dancer returned to Japan, which was still reeling from the devastating effects of the tsunami. She wanted only one thing: to recreate a meeting with her father. But how do you close the gulf that now separates them? Her answer: an artistic and human rapprochement. The father willingly accepts to take part in his daughter’s question-and-answer game: “Why are your sculptures so dark? Do you believe in ghosts?” While highly personal, these questions also touch on universal themes such as the transition from child to adult, and dislocation. The tenderness and refound sense of filial love expressed by these two artists in their shared dance is because in Japan words are not to be trusted.
Kaori Ito studied classical ballet in her native Tokyo before moving to the United States to continue her training. During her career she has worked with the likes of Philippe Découflé, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and James Thiérée. In 2008, she choreographed her first work, Noctiluque, inspired by Kafka’s Metamorphosis. In less than 10 years, she has become a leading light of the international contemporary dance scene. This versatile artist is also a talented video producer and is involved in a wide range of projects, notably for the stage.
