Geneva

Edition 2017

In the run-up to this celebration of contemporary dance, which is held every two years in a different Swiss city, a jury comprising five leading figures from the world of dance has watched more than 140 productions over the last 12 months. The winning entries will be presented at 12 venues across Geneva, which have joined forces especially for the occasion through the creation of an association and a small team.

In doing so, they, alongside Reso – Dance Network Switzerland, provide a tangible demonstration of their commitment to the art of choreography and dance in Switzerland. The Swiss Dance Days, which are also open to the public, are aimed at professionals – journalists, festival directors, programmers – from both Switzerland and abroad.

WOMB (3D-Film)

Gilles Jobin

The latest work by Gilles Jobin is an augmented artistic experience, the like of which has never been seen in the world of dance before. WOMB is a 3D short film which marries stereoscopic images, dance, visual art and music. It is an existential tracking shot, an abstract analogy of life’s journey that draws on the depth of space and the volume of bodies to trigger a contemplative and emotional response. The Swiss choreographer invited a number of leading contemporary artists to join him on his innovative adventure: the artist Sylvie Fleury, the Belgian clothes designer Jean-Paul Lespagnard, and Franz Treichler, the Young Gods frontman. The project is supported by Pro Helvetia as part of its “Digital Culture” programme.

Biography

Of all Swiss choreographers, Gilles Jobin is undoubtedly the artist who has made the greatest and most lasting impression on the international contemporary dance scene. To date, he has created 21 works, all of which have been widely performed. A true trailblazer, the projects he develops are as remarkable as they are numerous, blending dance with visual arts, electronica, science and even new technologies. His studios in Geneva are not only somewhere where dancers can learn and hone their craft; Jobin has also made them a place for the recognition of contemporary dance in Switzerland and a stimulating environment for international exchanges.
