Geneva

Edition 2017

In the run-up to this celebration of contemporary dance, which is held every two years in a different Swiss city, a jury comprising five leading figures from the world of dance has watched more than 140 productions over the last 12 months. The winning entries will be presented at 12 venues across Geneva, which have joined forces especially for the occasion through the creation of an association and a small team.

In doing so, they, alongside Reso – Dance Network Switzerland, provide a tangible demonstration of their commitment to the art of choreography and dance in Switzerland. The Swiss Dance Days, which are also open to the public, are aimed at professionals – journalists, festival directors, programmers – from both Switzerland and abroad.

Final selection

La Ribot

Another Distinguée

Anne Maniglier

La Ribot's ongoing project, Distinguished Pieces, is an accumulation of short sketches (distinguished pieces). Organised into collections they have been presented in galleries and studio theatres across the world. Originally conceived as fragmented discourses punctuating her life they push the boundaries of choreography, reframing our view of the body as both object and subject. Twenty-three years after the first Distinguished Piece, La Ribot has created her fifth series - Another Distinguée, which includes eight new pieces. The spectator is invited into a particular yet familiar space - a black cube - where a vast looming dark presence dominates. Joined by actor Juan Loriente and dancer Thami Manekehla, La Ribot moves the audience around the opaque and sinister shadows, exploring the invisibility and opening up infinite and multiple points of view.

Biography

Born in Madrid, La Ribot lives and works in Geneva. Her practice has fundamentally changed the field of contemporary dance. Borrowing freely from the idioms of theatre, visual arts, performance and film, her work positions itself squarely at the point of friction between different artistic disciplines and fields. For La Ribot, dance is the starting point for an extensive experimentation process that is always rooted in the body’s many languages.
