Geneva

Edition 2017

In the run-up to this celebration of contemporary dance, which is held every two years in a different Swiss city, a jury comprising five leading figures from the world of dance has watched more than 140 productions over the last 12 months. The winning entries will be presented at 12 venues across Geneva, which have joined forces especially for the occasion through the creation of an association and a small team.

In doing so, they, alongside Reso – Dance Network Switzerland, provide a tangible demonstration of their commitment to the art of choreography and dance in Switzerland. The Swiss Dance Days, which are also open to the public, are aimed at professionals – journalists, festival directors, programmers – from both Switzerland and abroad.

Final selection

Cindy Van Acker et le Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève

Elementen III - Blazing Wreck

Christian Lutz

This piece, which Cindy Van Acker created specifically with the Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève in mind, is inspired by the postulates set out in the seminal treatise Elements by the mathematician Euclid. Today, these postulates imprint their rhythms on the movements, the lighting and the space that make up this performance. Accompanying this sensorially incandescent quest, which explores the limits of human perception, is the evocative and powerful music of Finnish artist Mika Vainio. The electronic soundtrack conjures up the image of a cargo ship battling its way through a raging storm. As Van Acker explains, “Every bodily pulsation has to become part of the music.” Indeed, this image, which echoes the title of the piece (Blazing Wreck), is itself a thinly veiled reference to the shipwrecks painted by William Turner.

Biography

The Belgium dancer and choreographer with a classical background, joined the Ballet du Grand Théâtre Genève in 1990 and founded her own company Cie Greffe in Geneva. As a choreographer in her own right, she has created more than 20 genre-straddling pieces that explore “the connections between body and soul, sound and rhythm”. Van Acker also collaborates with international artists working outside the field of dance, such as Myriam Gourfink, Mika Vainio and Romeo Castellucci.
