SOLIDARITY!

Diversity is the watchword of the hour and seems to guarantee a pluralistic society in solidarity. Yet how does it feel to be at home here and there, to have multiple senses of belonging? What creates a feeling of belonging, apart from national identity? In Rebecca Weingartner’s latest piece, «SOLIDARITY!», two dancers and a musician meet. Their biographies are as multi-faceted as they are different, but they have all experienced the feeling of not belonging. On stage, they challenge each other to be courageous and overcome their own boundaries. The musician dances; the dancers make music and sing. To make this work, they need active support – from each other, but also from the audience. Together, they form a chorus of moving bodies, a resounding, cracking, singing ensemble that rises up and takes a stand for hidden stories. Thus, «SOLIDARITY!» tries to create a temporary community within the theatrical space where all people – despite all their differences – can feel they belong.

Biography

Rebecca Weingartner is a Hong Kong-Swiss artist residing and working in Basel. In 2021 she was awarded the Cultural Prize for Dance of the Canton Basel-Land. Following the success of «EQUALITY!», a dance piece on gender equality developed in collaboration with Benjamin Lindh Medin, Rebecca Weingartner pursues developing her work for a young audience with «SOLIDARITY!». The company plans to continue its exploration of the iconic slogan of the French Revolution, «Liberty, Equality, Solidarity[1]», by reinterpreting it for a young audience and addressing present-day issues. In spring 2025, they will present «GUGUS!» as the conclusion of the trilogy, offering an unconventional interpretation of the concept of freedom.
