Minimal repetition.
Can a «move» belong to anyone? Taking a cue from the copyright infringement lawsuit brought by the American rapper 2 Milly against a video game company, Jeremy Nedd’s group piece «from rock to rock … aka how magnolia was taken for granite» dedicates itself to the viral dance phenomenon «The Milly Rock». Five performers examine this Hip-Hop «move» inspired by the rapper 2 Milly, which consists of minimalist and repetitive arm and leg movements executed in different variations. Together, they explore marginalized idioms of movement as well as the poetry and virtuosity inherent in such social and viral dance movements. This leads to a precise performance which unfolds with hypnotic power – intimate and touching.
Transparency Note: Brandy Butler is part of this year’s Swiss Dance Days jury and performs in this piece. She excused herself from the adjudication of the piece and did not cast a vote in this case.
Jeremy Nedd is a choreographer and performer from Brooklyn, New York who lives in Basel. After studying dance at SUNY Purchase College in New York, he worked with various choreographers such as Kyle Abraham, who mixes Hip-Hop, street dance and modern dance. Since 2010, Jeremy Nedd has lived in Europe. As a dancer, he had various engagements, e.g. at the Semper Opera in Dresden, at Ballet Basel and in works by Trajal Harrell at the Zurich Schauspielhaus. His own works, in which he integrates the dance styles of different communities into contemporary dance, have been presented at the Kaserne Basel, at the Arsenic Lausanne and at the Kammerspiele in Munich, among others. Nedd graduated with a master’s in Expanded Theatre from the Berne Academy of the Arts. In 2023, he received the Swiss Performing Arts Award and in 2025, the Ellis-Beauregard Foundation Choreographer Award.
The performance spaces and toilets at the Dampfzentrale are accessible to wheelchair users via a stair lift. Please contact us by email at kasse@dampfzentrale.ch so that we can reserve a suitable seat in the auditorium for you.
A sign language interpreter will be present before this performance. She will also translate one scene of the play into Swiss German sign language.
Thanks to a partnership with the Sinfonietta de Lausanne, six vibration vests are available for this performance. The vests convert music and sounds into perceptible vibrations. Built-in vibrotactile modules respond to different frequencies and intensities, allowing the rhythm, bass and certain sound structures to be felt physically. This creates a tactile musical experience. The vests are primarily intended for deaf and hard-of-hearing people and can be reserved free of charge.
