ZOO / Thomas Hauert
In «Efeu», Thomas Hauert and three other dancers of the company ZOO dedicate themselves to the physical relationship between life and earth. The oscillation between tension and relaxation, the complexity, simultaneity and dynamic of these antagonisms in our body, and the alternating between resistance and giving in to gravity are the points of departure, focus and creative fields of this project. Its dramaturgy is abstract, resembling a musical composition rather than a theatrical narrative. The movement of the human body provides the raw material containing, in its essence, the resistance against the most destructive and relentless force in the universe – life itself – which also requires certain unlikely conditions in order to arise and persist. «Efeu» is an ode to life, and to Planet Earth with its paper-thin atmosphere.
Thomas Hauert is a dancer and choreographer. In 1998 he founded the company ZOO in Brussels, which has created more than 20 works and toured them worldwide over the past 25 years. In addition to his work as a choreographer, he has developed an internationally recognized teaching method based on the improvisation-based movement research of his company. From 2012 to 2013, he was a guest professor for dance and performance at the Institute of Theatre Studies at the Free University in Berlin. Since 2013, he has been the artistic director of the bachelor’s degree course in contemporary dance at the Manufacture – Haute école des arts de la scène in Lausanne.
